How to create a backup of your iOS device

You can use iTunes (or Finder on macOS Catalina or higher) to create a backup of your iPod Touch, iPad or iPhone on your computer. Your backup will contain your iOS device data, such as your messages, contacts, calendars and call logs. iBackup Extractor you help you browse and extract the information held within these backup archives.

Please note that your iTunes/Finder preferences may not be set to produce these backups by default. You can set up automatic device backups to your computer or manually start a device backup yourself.

Manually Start a device backup using iTunes.

It is possible to make iTunes perform a back up of your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch on demand.

  1. Connect your device to your computer and start iTunes.
  2. Right click on your device from the Devices list in iTunes.
  3. Select "Back Up" from the pop-up menu.

iTunes will create a backup of your iOS data. Once complete - restart iBackup Extractor to read and retrieve content from this backup.

Set up iTunes to automatically backup your iOS device.

You can set your preferences in iTunes so that iTunes will automatically backup your iOS data every time you sync your device to iTunes.

  1. Connect your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch to your computer and start iTunes.
  2. In iTunes, click your devices in the Devices list on the left.
  3. A summary screen is displayed about your device. Scroll down to the bottom of this summary screen to the "Back up" section.
  4. Ensure that "Back up to this computer" is selected. (iBackup Extractor cannot read backups from iCloud).
  5. Click the "Apply" button on the bottom right hand side of the iTunes window.

Backup your iOS device using Finder (for macOS Catalina and higher)

If you are using a Mac computer running macOS Catalina or higher, you will have noticed that iTunes has been replaced by the Music app.

For this reason, Apple have changed the way you can back up your iPhone, iPod or iPad. Now, you'll need to use the Finder app. Here's how it's done...

  1. Open Finder on your Mac.
  2. Connect your device using your USB cable.
  3. Select your device from the list of Locations on the left.
  4. Enable "Back up all the data on your {device} to this Mac".
  5. Click "Back Up Now" to start the backup!
